Tectonic Shift<\/p>\n

Downy, soft, fragile newborn skull, a dandelion
\nwaving on its slender stem. No support, poor<\/p>\n

support. Hold her head, they caution, cradle
\nher neck they command. Her heartbeat is visible<\/p>\n

through her fontanel, the top of her head\u2014
\nshould that be so pronounced? Her cranial sutures<\/p>\n

stand out when she cries, red faced, open
\nmouthed, distress howl, and you see that her head<\/p>\n

is barely held together, five bones and their
\nunjoined sutures: sagittal, lambdoid, coronal,<\/p>\n

metopic. Bone against bone, spreading apart,
\noverlapping, expanding again, they make room<\/p>\n

for growth, unlike the hard adult cranium. Four
\narbitrarily named seams on the grid of a head<\/p>\n

guard the brain. Some days I slip\u2014my sutures slip
\nand the parts that were so securely fastened<\/p>\n

inside, so integrated, peek out and speak. Just
\nwhen you\u2019d think my dandelion would be<\/p>\n

a redwood, my fontanel is soft, unexpectedly
\nfragile. My sutures unhinge, unable to contain<\/p>\n

their contents, to lock them in. I thought I was
\nfinished, I protest. I thought I was done. But these<\/p>\n

sutures will not join, they will not agree
\nto house the prison of all my selves<\/p>\n
