A flashlight<br \/>\nwould be a friend, a protector.<br \/>\nThere is so much splintered<\/p>\n<p>glassware. In the morning,<br \/>\nbefore the power returns, you<br \/>\ntake in the ruins, the way your home,<br \/>\nyour neighborhood, has been lifted up,<br \/>\nshaken, and dropped any which way.<\/p>\n<p>You plot ways to get more bottled<br \/>\nwater if there is enough cash, if<br \/>\nthe corner market hasn\u2019t run out yet<br \/>\n\u2014water is the thing\u2014but suddenly<br \/>\nnot as important as chocolate. You<\/p>\n<p>obsess about chocolate now as you<br \/>\nrattle through your grim medical reports,<br \/>\nlocate your meds, and reconsider their<br \/>\nusefulness in the rubble of your life,<br \/>\njust wanting us back the way we were<\/p>\n<p>before tests, procedures, and surgeries,<br \/>\nbefore meds and your pacemaker,<br \/>\nbreathing treatments and machines<br \/>\nand all those scans; before the forgetting,<br \/>\nthe missed cues, the mirrored dismay<\/p>\n<p>of others; back the way we were before<br \/>\nthis earthquake of lurching past your<br \/>\nbody\u2019s limits. Chocolate beckons: dark,<br \/>\nsemisweet, Swiss, chocolate pecan turtles,<br \/>\nand fudgy toffee kisses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Read my poem in the Spring Edition of Please See Me.
